The CAIS Lab is seeking graduate and undergraduate students to join the team.
Students should be motivated, hard-working, and interested in one or more of the following areas:
- Control theory and applications
- Dynamic systems
- Industrial automation
- Applied artificial intelligence
- Smart manufacturing / Industry 4.0

Graduate Students
If you are interested in joining the lab as a graduate student, you must first be admitted to a graduate program at Penn State.
If you have not yet been admitted and would like to work in the CAIS Lab, please apply to either the:
- Penn State Mechanical Engineering (ME) graduate program, or
- Penn State Industrial & Manufacturing Engineering (IME) graduate program.
The department will then review your application and determine your fit with the program.
Once you have been admitted to Penn State, you are encouraged to email Dr. Kovalenko to discuss potential research opportunities.
When contacting the lab (after admission), please include the following in a single email:
- Status of your application/admission to a graduate engineering program at Penn State
- A brief statement of research interests
- Unofficial academic transcript
- Current resume or CV
Undergraduate Students
We are currently looking for highly motivated undergraduate students at Penn State who are interested in any of the topics listed above.
Undergraduate students in the lab will be assigned a supervised research project that must be taken as one of the following:
- For course credit (e.g., ME 496 or IE 496)
- As part of an undergraduate thesis
- As part of another research program/experience
